Our favourite Music Videos and Why (Group) (joe fisher, Kierann finished)

Our favourite Music Videos and Why

This blog post will help show our favourite music videos and why we like them. This will bring to light similarities between what we all like to see in a music video, which we can use to our advantage if we think of a way to import the method in to our music video. It also highlights differences in our thinking and what we, as individuals but part of a group, like, as opposed to to another group member, who may dislike a certain method

Joe Fisher
Rich Chigga - Who That Be (Official Music Video)
This music video is edited really well in my opinion, and I guess that's also plays in to camera work. The shots where the editing cuts respond to the beat and then the camera is at a low angle, zooming in and then drawing back out. Also the camera tilt which occurs during the main part of the song makes it seem like the location is rotating, instead of the camera doing so. The costumes work really well in this video, too. For example, the artist is wearing a black turtleneck sweater whilst stroking a cat, a usual representation of the classical "villain" character. This is reinforced by the lack of lighting and the setting. Further on in the music video, when the lyric "all my people riding in the back seat" occurs, his people are represented in normal / rider clothes with helmets on, masking their image but also reinforcing the idea of using vehicles such as cars and bikes through lyrical and attire correspondence. The locations are chosen well, and the artist is usually in the centre of the frame. the settings draw a number of colours and light, especially with the use of day and night to present different light levels and images.

Joe French
Yung Lean - Miami Ultras
Costume: Gender roles become switched, wearing man wearing a dress
Location: represents emotion, portrays what the artist may be going through (feeling), through the use of scenery and background settings
The reason i like this music video so much is because of all the small details in the shots that have such a big significance to the artist. The fact that he is wearing hospital scrubs indicates he may have been in hospital before for some reason which is not good and could be showing the struggle he went through. He was all alone in the video too which could suggest that he felt alone through his struggles and felt as if there was no one there to help him which is why no one else appears in the entire music video. The reason he was digging a hole was probably a way to say that he is burying his old self and that he wants to emerge from his troubled time as a better person and a stronger person than he ever used to be. This music video is way of him saying that he had things he was struggling with and he managed to get through them and become a new person.

Chris Phillips
OWL CITY - Fireflies
Mainly likes the song, everything reacts in the music video whilst he sings, makes the singing feel unrehearsed and almost real, like it was happening in real time.

DPR LIVE - Jasmine (prod. CODE KUNST)
Intriguing visuals and cinematography separates it from the rest of the music video market, likes the way the general music video responds and how the beat responds to the editing.

The reason why I love this music video is because it has a specific vibe you do not find in mainstream music videos. It has great cinematography which is shown fluently throughout the music video. Unlike mainstream music videos it doesn’t rely on any CGI. Its 100% cinematography. I myself am a photographer/cinematographer so with this music video I really do appreciate it and enjoy some of the fantastic shots. I like the simplicity of the music video. Most music videos these days are very political and have loads of hidden messages, or are heavily story driven and the majority of people enjoy this, however I find this too repetitive in today’s creative world. So DPR LIVE’s Jasmin is a nice change from that. “Jasmin” has literally has no narrative within the music video, the only hint of a narrative is in the lyrics. This made me, the audience now focus more on the great shots and the artist himself. The advantage of the music video being purely performance based is that we get to see the artist’s raw talent and his passion for music. The downside of this is that the audience may become bored after a while, however I believe that this isn’t the case with this music video as the cinematography makes up for it. In the music video DPR LIVE is presented in a chill and peaceful vibe though his body language and costume choice. This nicely fits in with the slow beat and soft lyrics, creating a very relaxing and therapeutic vibe. In this music video I really like his costume. He is wearing a white shirt, denim jacket and blue jeans and Van trainers, which is very fashionable clothing in today’s youth. By the artist dressing in fashionable clothes I feel that I am able to relate to him as we share the same fashion sense. The benefit of him dressing like this is that it attracts vires, such like myself, to his music videos. The genre of this music video is Hip-Hop but the vibe I am getting off of it is an Indie vibe. This is because I believe that the narrative is up to anyone’s interpretation. As well as this it shares many common conventions as Indie music such as its low budget and settings. We can see that the music video is low budget as it is mostly set in places which are free to access such as woods. It also has little props with the only prop being a van in which the artist lies on top of. As well as the settings e.g. woods and road side. It also has a do it yourself kind of style, homemade.
